Has Our President Committed a Crime? . by Alice B. Clagett

Dear Ones,

In every storm there is a silver lining, as the old saying goes. In these stormy times, I feel it is good to spot that silver lining, and know that though there may be darkness all around, still good may come of it.

For instance, it is clear from the changed votes in the Capitol building yesterday that the riot in Washington, DC, yesterday was not altogether a bad thing. When push came to shove, our representatives set aside bipartisan concerns and chose to stand for our democratic way of life. I pray this spirit of cooperation amongst our political parties may continue in the coming year.

On another note, as it seemed to me from the news last night that our president might be construed as perpetrating sedition, or inciting to riot, or attempting to obstruct our government’s due process, or maybe even intending to establish a dictatorship, as some, I guess, surmise, I read up on sedition today …

If our president were to be accused of sedition after stepping down, then what would happen to him, I wondered. I just now read that sedition is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. On the other hand, I read that no United States president has ever gone to prison. As well, the history of sedition acts in America seems to be bound up with protection of our presidents from scandal …

If I were in the boat of figuring out what to do about a president accused of any of the above, I would likely consider peace and harmony in our nation as a top priority. Our president has been very popular; to attack him might raise waves of social unrest in America, do you not feel it to be so?

Not that our president is Christ, but taking the example of Christ, to martyr such a popular person might increase public sentiment in favor of overthrowing our government. That is why, to my way of thinking, martyrdom is not at all a good idea.

Rather, let us look to peaceful days, a strengthening job market, and increasingly profitable enterprise as the salubrious effects of COVID vaccination reverberate through our economy in the new year.
